Macquarie Dictionary defines contrast as the ‘opposition or juxtaposition of different forms, lines, or colours in a work of art to intensify each other’s properties and produce a more dynamic expression.’
Flicking through my favourite magazines, I find there is often a statement piece of furniture, art, fitting or soft furnishing involved in the styling of a room that creates a contrast, and consequently, an impact. The use of colour, I believe has the most profound effect, no matter how bold or subtle it is. It always seems to add that extra dimension.
So next time you are contemplating colour and detail in your home, consider the layers involved just like when dressing for a special occasion. A splash of colour in a pashmina, bold coloured wedge heels, or brightly painted fingernails are the details that add that wow factor. It displays confidence and attention to detail and it is these same principles that apply for a well dressed room.
