As Spring is in the air, thoughts in the office are turning towards what’s new, fresh, and bright. We are seeing beautiful fabrics in our workroom and we love the individual look they achieve.
A particular design that we are seeing more of is the wonderful Ikat. This refers to the traditional global artisan textiles that are so popular in the world of design at the moment.
Jon Robshaw of New York is one such textile designer who is championing this design. His hand blocked linens are popular with the jetset who are looking for a more relaxed well-travelled look in their decor. His mini empire covers everything from bedding, fabrics by the metre (available through Heatherly Design), upholstery, clothing, rugs, decor, and of course his own book.
The wonderful thing about Ikat is that it lends itself to many applications. It looks great as a single item used in a punchy way in a large cushion on a bed, or used in a dramatic way such as this beautiful blue and white example.
Another designer who loves the drama and versatility that Ikat brings to a rooms decor is Martyn Lawrence Bullard, one of the stars of million dollar decorators. His fabric collections for New York textile house Schumacher feature Ikat designs in all manner of colour and scale. This is a designer who is not afraid of colour and pattern! Anyone who has seen this program knows how he uses patterns such as Ikats to great effect in his schemes for clients.
