The ultimate bedroom retreat
The holiday season is a wonderful opportunity to slow down after a busy year and take a little time out. Our bedroom is where we go to escape the stresses of the world, so it’s important to create a comfortable and peaceful space that truly feels like a retreat – somewhere to rest and recharge, to call our “happy place”… an oasis of calm. Here are our 10 tips for the ultimate bedroom retreat.
DECLUTTER
Clean room, clear mind! The first step to creating a retreat is to declutter the space. Remove what you don’t need and store what you do in a beautifully upholstered shoebox at the end of your bed (which doubles as a seat, so it’s win-win!) Another stylish option is a gas lift bed, ideal for storing bulky items.

CHOOSE YOUR STYLE
Express yourself by choosing a style that you really love. What will it be? Contemporary? Classic? Bohemian? Keeping your style in mind during the process will give you a clear vision of how you want your bedroom retreat to look and feel when you’re finished.

ADD TEXTURE AND COLOUR
Will your retreat be light and airy? Or perhaps you prefer cosy and moody? Either way, adding different textures and colours can make all the difference – a velvet cushion, a coloured wall, a linen bedhead, a fluffy blanket – it’s all about surrounding yourself with objects that add depth and warmth, please the eye and calm the senses.

ADJUST THE LIGHTING
There’s no excuse for bad lighting, especially in a bedroom. Choose low wattage globes for your bedside lamps to give the room a calming, golden glow, and make sure your main light has a dimmer. And of course, what would a bedroom retreat be without a few scented candles? We all know you can never have too many…
ADD GREENERY
Bring nature indoors. Adding indoor plants to your bedroom is not only aesthetically pleasing, it’s also good for your health. Even one or two can make all the difference to your mood and wellbeing. Choose low maintenance plants and breathe in all that oxygenated goodness.
MOVE ELECTRONICS
We know it can be hard to switch off – literally! – however, using your phones and computers at night only engages your senses, when you’re trying to relax and wind down. Try leaving them out of reach at least one hour before bedtime. Out of sight, out of mind.
ACCESSORISE
Placing your favourite objects around the room will naturally bring a sense of happiness and calm to your retreat space – whether it’s beautiful artwork, trinkets from your travels, vases of flowers – whatever it is that holds meaning for you and makes you feel happy to be waking up there every day.
A CHAIR WITH A VIEW
Sometimes, we just need a quiet spot in which to daydream and just… sit. A beautiful, comfortable chair by a window can be your special place to read, write, or simply enjoy the view. Adorn with a cushion or pillow to make your nook extra comfy.

INVEST IN A COMFORTABLE BED
It’s no secret: we spend a lot of time in our bed… so best make it comfortable! Whatever your preference – firm, medium, plush or ultra plush – your mattress is an important investment in your health and ensures that you get the best sleep possible to wake up feeling refreshed. It also helps to find your Holy Grail of pillows and sheets… And needless to say, a beautiful bedhead in your chosen style would be a great addition to the room.

ADD A BEAUTIFUL RUG
Is there any better feeling than a beautifully plush rug under your feet last thing at night and first thing in the morning? Just a few seconds of digging your toes into the softness is a heavenly way to start and end each day. Choose a rug that adds warmth and compliments your style and colour scheme.
