A Few of My Favourite Things: How to Design a Bedroom with Meaning
The joy of designing with collected treasures is that we create spaces that truly reflect who we are. At Heatherly we believe that our homes should provide a sanctuary filled with meaning. They are the place where we gather our history, influences and the special things that bring us joy. Bedrooms especially, are a place to surround ourselves with familiar and meaningful pieces. This goes way beyond furniture and finishes! A sentimental family ornament or a gift from someone special can make us feel truly at home.
The unifying nature of patterns and neutrals.
For Autumn 2024 we are redefining our favourites in colours, patterns and designs that blend seamlessly with a mix of eras and styles. Patterns create a timeless backdrop to anchor and connect, so that cherished pieces from past generations can sit happily next to a new souvenir.
Neutrals are perfect for bringing harmony to layered elements such as artwork and personal pieces that we want to keep close by the bed (and near to our heart!). The curved silhouette of our ALICE in the soft toned block print Mimi Chalk Linen is a favourite for this approach. Adding plants and flowers by the bed is always a good idea, both for colour and a positive impact on wellbeing. Keeping a stack of favourite books close at hand on a Lucca Bedside Table is another way to bring meaning to your space (and help you achieve that important screen-free bedtime routine).
Building personality is key.
If you’re a collector at heart, you may already be confident layering keepsakes with new additions and combining furniture and decor from different periods. If not, try telling a story with your curation. You could include a treasure from an inspiring trip (to Italy or the op shop) or a valuable family heirloom. Seeing how they might work together is part of the fun.
The warm, earthy tones of the block printed Para Mustard Linen on our curvy bestseller GISELLE is a great match with eclectic finds. By the bedside a few thoughtfully placed pieces, some flowers for colour and a vintage style lamp for mood lighting or reading make the story complete.
There are no rules.
Variety is key to building a unique look and there’s no need to match pieces if you don’t feel the need! Bedside tables, lamps and paintings of different eras, shapes and sizes will add depth and interest.
The classic LUELLA silhouette finished in Leilani Linen introduces feminine florals and bright optimistic colour. This pattern frees the palette to play with textures and layering of pillows, multicolour accent rugs and throws. It’s also perfect for pairing with contrasting chairs and ottomans, artwork and quirky collectibles.
Designing a bedroom using favourite pieces collected over time connects us with our memories and brings us joy, meaning and a sense of belonging. A fun souvenir can work perfectly next to a priceless antique so don’t be afraid to experiment and have fun with the collected look!
