Books, Beds & Bordeaux: An Evening with Sally Hepworth

There are few things better than a great book, a glass of Bordeaux and an evening spent in good company. Add a room full of Heatherly beds – and one of Australia’s most celebrated authors – and you have the recipe for a rather special night.

This week, we welcomed the brilliant and utterly lovely Sally Hepworth to our Melbourne showroom for Books, Beds & Bordeaux – an intimate evening celebrating the joy of reading, storytelling and the rituals that give us permission to pause.

Settled into Heatherly beds with glasses of Bordeaux in hand, guests joined Sally for an inspiring and wonderfully entertaining conversation about the art of writing, the women and relationships that shape her stories, and the unexpected twists that have become her signature.

There was plenty of insight, plenty of laughter and more than a few moments of recognition as Sally shared the stories behind her writing and her latest novel, Mad Mabel. Sally was as engaging and warm as her books are compelling, giving us a glimpse into the creative mind behind some of our most-loved page-turners.

And then there was Mabel. Without giving too much away, Sally’s latest heroine is wonderfully complex, colourful and impossible to forget. Hearing Sally talk about how this extraordinary character came to life was one of the many highlights of the evening.

Of course, no book club gathering would be complete without taking a little piece of the story home. Guests had the opportunity to meet Sally and have their copy of Mad Mabel personally signed – a special memento of an evening spent celebrating the joy of books, storytelling and connection.

As the evening drew to a close, glasses were emptied, conversations continued and books were tucked under arms. Reminding us that perhaps the greatest luxury of all is simply making time to stop, settle in to the comfort of one’s bed and get lost in the story of a great novel for a little while.
