The Art of Rest: Inside The Sanctuary of Samantha Rose Andison
An interview series curating how style leaders interpret the art of rest – from textures and tones to the rituals that define their personal retreat.
The poetic way Samantha Rose Andison moves through the world translates seamlessly into her imagery, her home, and her work at Studio Sojourn. As a photographer, content creator and founder of a studio dedicated to celebrating the beauty of considered living, Samantha has an intuitive ability to distil calm from the everyday. In this edition of The Art of Rest, Samantha invites us into her bedroom – a sanctuary where stillness is intentional, design is expressive, and her Heatherly bed becomes the anchor for moments of pause in a beautifully full life.
1. Your work spans photography, content creation and design – all fields that demand a constant flow of creativity. How do you cultivate stillness and inspiration within such a visually rich, fast-moving world?
My work constantly has me thinking of ideas, photos, imagery, aesthetic – so when I’m not working I try really had to ground myself and recalibrate.
When there’s this expectation to constantly be creative, it can feel quite exhausting, so I like to put myself in a space that absorbs my surroundings rather than making me feel like I constantly need to produce more.
Your home feels calm, airy and intuitively composed – much like your imagery. What atmosphere did you hope to create within your bedroom, and how does your Heatherly bed contribute to that sense of calm beauty?
I feel like my bed is this big, long exhale. When I work, I work in big groups of people for really long hours. So when I get home and I see my bed it’s like an anchor that draws me in and restores me.
I really love the Louis bed in particular because it has this beautiful tactical warmth to it, so it still feels quite inviting, but quite elevated at the same time.
Between creative projects and running Studio Sojourn, your days must be beautifully full. What does “the art of rest” mean in your current season of life?
An honest one! At the moment a day off looks like a morning in bed, a coffee and a book – maybe migrate to the lounge and watch real housewives and have a midday nap.
Sleep for me is really important at this stage of my life so I don’t mind really investing in really good quality pieces that are going to last.
We often say that a bedroom should reflect not just how you live, but how you dream. What elements make your space feel most you?
So I think the elements that make my space feel most like me would be the art pieces and the small quirky details, I think in general I have an inviting, but muted tone to the house – but I do love to add in quirky pieces and pops of colour to get my personality in there.
I’m ok with buying mismatched things because I feel like in the end they all work together well anyway.
Rituals often shape the way we unwind. Can you share a few small rituals – morning or evening – that help you slow down and reset?
My daily rituals would include:
- My morning coffee shop run, I love a familiar face!
- I love to make my bed in the morning, it makes me feel like I’m winning.
- I listen to my favourite podcasts, I enjoy a familiar voice while I’m working.
- I love burning incense and candles, it’s a really lovely ritual that makes me feel grounded and allows me toe decompress
- And finally, a long hot shower at the end of the day!
